Friends and family members mean well, but comments intended to show empathy and support can sometimes have just the opposite effect.

Below is a list of some things to keep in mind when approaching a loved one with an eating disorder.

bullet Avoid talking about food and weight — those are't the real issues!
bullet Assure them that they are not alone and that you love them, with or without the eating disorder.
bullet Encourage them to seek help.
bullet Never try to force them to eat.
bullet Do not comment on their weight or appearance.
bullet Do not blame the individual and do not get angry with them.
bullet Be patient. Recovery takes time.
bullet Do not make mealtimes a battleground.
bullet Listen to them. Don't be quick to give opinions and advice.
bullet Don't take on the role of a therapist.
