Mirasol Eating Disorder Recovery Centers
Integrative Treatment for Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorders
Holidays and Eating Disorders
For people who are still struggling with eating disorders and depression, the holidays bring up different kinds of stressors. Dysfunctional family interactions may be a source of stress. For some of us, holidays may bring up unpleasant memories of previous occasions. For others, holidays never quite live up to our expectations of what the holiday “should be like.”
Most holiday events feature huge quantities of food. There may be a great deal of pressure from well-meaning friends and family to eat and drink more than is comfortable for us. If we use eating disorder behaviors as a way of coping with stress in our lives, it's almost guaranteed that the holidays will be a time when we're most active in our behaviors, experiencing consequent increases in depression, guilt, shame, fear, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Are you in crisis?
Are you afraid to go to treatment?
How do you feel about being completely recovered?
Have you had multiple treatments and are still suffering?
Have you been traumatized by strict, "boot-camp" style treatment centers?
Mirasol is a residential center dedicated to integrative treatment of anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating. We believe that eating disorders are the result of chronic stress and trauma, and emphasize therapies that have proven successful in the treatment of other stress-related conditions.
Our multidisciplinary treatment team consists of psychiatrists, psychotherapists, nurses, doctors and dietitians who work closely with practitioners of alternative medicine, including neurofeedback, bodywork, Chinese medicine, EMDR, somatic therapy, equine therapy and adventure therapy.
Instead of focusing on suppressing eating disorder symptoms, we identify the root of the problem and develop new ways of communicating and coping that restore and maintain overall balance. We believe that the skills we teach are more effective and longer lasting than restrictive protocols, and provide the opportunity to practice those skills in a safe environment that supports change.
We offer residential treatment programs for teen girls and boys, ages 12 to 17, and for women ages 18 and up. Our Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) serve as much-needed step-downs in treatment where the setting, while supervised, is a little less structured, giving the patient an opportunity to “practice” their new skills while still in a protected milieu. In addition, our new Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) offers short-term, effective eating disorder treatment for adults and adolescents (both male and female) ages 12 to 17. Many of our patients go from regular in-patient or residential treatment to PHP and then on to Intensive Outpatient while still living in a Mirasol residence.
With a 3:1 staff-client ratio, we offer extraordinary individual attention and tailor our programs to the individual client's needs.
Small, intimate residences (limited to a maximum of 10 clients) in Territorial-style homes in southern Arizona's fabulous Sonoran Desert provide a secure and serene environment for healing.
Mirasol's Medical Director is a psychiatrist who embraces alternative forms of healing and integrative medicine. Our clinicians use non-pharmaceutical alternatives whenever possible to enhance and restore the body's natural ability to combat illness. We have a celebrated naturopathic physician on staff who offers a different perspective on medical issues. A regular doctor treats illness, whereas a naturopathic physician is focused on wellness. Last but not least, we believe that food can be used as medicine when it’s nutrition consisting of the highest quality and healthiest foods available.
Mirasol clients rediscover normal eating with individual meal plans and guidance from our staff dietitians.
